Watershed Initiatives at SARA

San Antonio River Authority
San Antonio, TX

The mission of the San Antonio River Authority is to Sustain and Enrich Life in the San Antonio River Watershed.  SARA serves a four county district comprised of the major metropolitan area of the City San of Antonio in Bexar County, the growing Wilson County, the heart of the Eagle Ford Shale oil and gas activity in Karnes County and the historic and more rural Goliad County.  Many initiatives are underway at SARA to achieve its mission within its district including the completion of a series of Watershed Master Plans to holistically identify and manage flood control and water quality challenges.  SARA is also addressing the growing impact of non-point source storm water runoff through advancing the application throughout the basin of low impact development, green infrastructure and other sustainable design techniques to reduce the quantity of water in small rain events while promoting filtration of pollutants before flowing into the waterways.  Ecosystem restoration of previously channelized segments of the San Antonio River and its tributaries in Bexar County is underway to improve the aquatic and riparian habitat of the watershed while also increasing recreational use of the river.  Suzanne Scott will provide a briefing on these initiatives and others ongoing at the San Antonio River Authority.
